How do people make the journey from no experience of Christian faith to becoming a mature disciple? What if their pathway to faith has a dead end?
“Pathways” is a simple process that helps congregations think about the steps in a person’s faith journey, and to consider what relationships, activities and resources they make available to people on each step of their journey towards mature faith.
Recently, Craig Mitchell and Rob Stoner trained a number of people across the Uniting Church SA in conducting the Pathways process. “Pathways” comes from Church Resource Ministries in Victoria and was adapted by the UCA in Queensland a few years ago. In a workshop that takes 2-3 hours, congregational leaders explore the nature of growth in faith, and then ‘map’ how they do (or don’t) offer people ways to make steps on their faith journey. They are then to helped to identify ways that they might work on closing the gaps in their discipleship pathways.
“Pathways” is based on seeing faith maturation as an organic process, like farming – in a sense the church is a discipleship farm.
The “Pathways” workshop is an active, participatory process. These people are equipped to assist congregations with the Pathways process:
